book no.1 of 2025

I love to read and I’ve recently developed a passion for christian books! My first read of the year was “God’s high calling for women” by John MacArthur, a rather short book, but good nonetheless!

This book dives into the message of 1 Timothy 2:9-15 “In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. Let a woman learn in silence with all submission, and I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self control.”

MacArthur begins the book by describing the cultural background and how the Ephesian church was surrounded paganism, and prostitution, among other things. The book also takes its time to describe a woman’s role in the church, to use her spiritual gifts; not to lead the church or have authority outside her God given role, but to use whatever her gift is in a way that glorifies God! A beautiful example of this is ‘ Elisabeth Elliot, after the murder of her husband, Jim, and several other missionaries in Ecuador, was the only missionary left who could speak the language of the Auca Indians. She taught one of the Auca men the sermon each week, and then he preached it to the church. We find in her story an excellent example of godly female leadership within the biblical context of allowing men to lead within the gatherings of the church.’

My favorite portion of the book was when he dug into verse 15 of 1 Timothy 2, that a woman will be saved through childbearing. “A woman led the human race into sin, yet women benefit mankind by replenishing the race. They also have the opportunity to lead the race to godliness through their influence on their children.”

This book galvanized me for the day I get to teach my kids about Jesus! The last section I want to share is about “G. Campbell Morgan, the great preacher, said ” My dedication to the preaching of the word was maternal. Mother never told it to the baby or the boy, but waited. When but eight years old I preached to my little sister and to her dolls arrayed in orderly form before me, my sermons were bible stories which I had first heard from my mother.” He went on to have 4 sons, all oof whom became preachers! When asked who the greatest preacher in the family was, G. Campbell Morgan replied “My mother”.
